Beaches and spas in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian Black Sea Coast has been a popular destination for decades due to its good beaches and pleasant temperatures during the summer season.

Popular resorts are Albena, Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, Varna and Bourgas which apart from their miles of golden sand beaches also offer restaurants, night clubs, discoteques, folklore programs, casino and roulette tables.  Sporting facilities include tennis courts, riding ground, mini-golf, bicycles, bowling, fitness centres, indoor and outdoor swimming pools etc.

 

 Varna

Also referred to as the Black Sea capital of Bulgaria, Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria. It is a city with historical heritage and the oldest processed gold in the history (dating from the 5th century BC) was found in Varna.

Attractions include many ancient monasteries and cultural buildings, the Cultural and Festival Centre, the Palace of Sports and Culture and the various preserved buildings dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.  There are Roman thermal baths from the 2nd or3rd century BC. The ethnographic museum, the Clock Tower built in 1880, as well as the Church of Assumption are also worth visiting. The Seaside Garden – the biggest park in Varna with unique and picturesque trees – is located along a golden sand beach strip and offers water sliding facilities, flower gardens and water basins, cafeterias, aquarium and dolphinarium.

Other attractions in Varna include a sea park with Seaside Baths, the Navy Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Dolphinarium, the Aquarium (with fish and organisms from Black Sea, freshwater and tropical environments), the Astronomical Observatory and the Planetarium which organizes viewings for visitors. 

 

Varna is also the largest sea spa centre in Bulgaria where mud treatment, sun, sea and sand procedures are gaining popularity and attracting tourists. Beyond the high season its spa facilities can help you unwind.

The mineral waters are extremely good for treatment of cardio vascular diseases, nervous system problems and disorders, upper respiratory tract and lung diseases and obesity. 

 

The thermal water in Golden sands and Riviera areas is suitable for systematic treatment of digestive system diseases, urinary and endocrine systems.

 

 

 

Golden sands 

 The Golden Sands resort is located 17 km north of Varna and has a unique combination of a tranquil and warm seas and forest covered slopes descending to the beach.

Popular activities apart from swimming are jet sports, surfing, water skiing and many other water sports.

Small bay areas are suitable for children and amateur swimmers.

 

  

Healing mineral spring waters offer visitors the chance to combine their holidays with spa treatments.

 

“Aquapolis” is a water amusement park covering an 40000 square metres in the northwest part of the resort area of Golden Sands. The aquatic park overlooks the seafront. 

 

 

 

Bourgas 

Bourgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria. The city is rapidly becoming a transfer hub to get to the large Black Sea resorts of Bulgaria. The Airport of Bourgas handles international flights during the summer season. Bourgas also has a busy bus station and railway facilities.

 

Attractions in Bourgas include The Sea Garden (which rivals the one in Varna), the cathedral of St. Cyril & Methodius with lavish decorations of mural paintings and frescos, the Armenian Church, the catholic cathedral, the churches of St. Deva Maria and St. Ivan Rilski, the Natural Science Museum, the Philharmonic orchestra and the Art Gallery. There are many bars, restaurants, cafeterias, entertainment and sport facilities. Bourgas has a few beaches and the city beach close to the Sea Garden is very popular.

 

The thermal baths of Bourgas date back to the 4th century BC. The thermal water is excellent for the treatment of ailments of the locomotive system, the central and peripheral nervous system, the digestive tract and gynaecological diseases, endocrine gland problems and kidney and urology disorders.

 

The mineral water in the area of Nessebar and Sunny Beach contains similar chemical components but with higher temperature.

 

 

 

An attractive and amazing area is the archeological reserve Yallata – a picturesque spot with hundreds of caves unveiling their historical significance (over a hundred caves have been dwelling places during the 6th and 5th century BC.)

There are vestiges of the past through ancient civilizations, the Hellenic stage of development, the early Byzantine epoch, and the Medieval times. The land of Yallata is the kingdom of the deciduous globeflower. Eagles, owls, hoppers, wheatears and other typical bird species settle in the rocks.

There are plenty of natural springs in the northern part of Bulgaria which are highly mineralized (Vidin and Montana) and springs in the Pleven region which have lower contents of minerals.
